The rain on his bare, unbroken skin feels like ice when the wind blows on it. No commanding officer would have someone flogged in such conditions. Except Kauffmann, a man whose only injury was his pride. The pain would be much, much worse in harsh conditions. Is going to be much worse. (Molly) Morgan braces himself. "You are sentenced to receive thirteen lashes for insubordination". Thirteen. A number that is avoided in Sudlachenburg, where he wishes he was instead. This makes him bow his head with shame, not because of his transgression, but at the thought of how he has let down his Mother, his Father, his Brother. But he will bear this pain without begging for mercy, without crying out, because he won't give Kauffmann the satisfaction. (Molly) He knows he was right to stop Kauffmann's actions. He saved lives. It would have been more painful to have failed those he has a duty to protect than to feel the Captain's Daughter. He holds his breath in anticipation of the first stroke. And it comes fast. (Molly) She is unpleasant, the Captain's Daughter. Her tongues are sharp, slicing his back in neat lines. "For failing your superior officer". Another lash, his blood flowing feels like hot water against the coldness of his flesh. "For failing your rank". Another. The pain is dreadful, so much worse as the rain and wind lash him also. "Failing your unit", lash, pain. "Failing your family's honour" pain, so much pain. It's hard to even stand, but he tries to do so, to show Courage against this Injustice. (Molly) "Failing your birthright" the pain is so sharp that he can barely breathe, and he starts to wonder if he can bear not just the vicious strikes, but bear it without believing these words that never happened in reality. He loses a grip on who he is with the next strike declaring he has "Failed the Family Name". (Molly) He's still bound and being flogged, but he no longer feels like the eighteen year old, naive young man who didn't really grasp the cruelty the world had in-store, and is now his own age. He's bound not to the Oreste, but to the Rose. It is no longer the bosun inflicting the pain, it is his own voice that castigates him. (Molly) For failing Dietlinde. The pain now is delivered harder, and it feels like it cuts through skin and muscle, and his very soul. For failing Jana, and this swing may as well have sliced his very heart for the emotional pain he feels. For failing Varick, the pain doubles to unbearable. How could he have let the boy die after having already let his daughter die horribly. (Molly) He starts to hope that the rain will carry away his blood, his life, seeping into the wood of the Rose, dripping down into the water just as Alarice's had dripped into the Sudlache. "And for failing your own Cousin" his back flesh is like white ribbons on red dress now. (Molly) For failing Molly. The pain burns in him as dark red as her hair. His second chance, a chance not to fuck it up, to protect her. And he had failed. She was gone. Another death on his conscience. The Captain's Daughter delivers two more agonising caresses across the ruin of his skin. He wishes for death in ways he hasn't for more than a year. (Molly) He feels a deep need, a pull inside him, radiating outwards. He feels like a magnet, his force reaching out and drawing something towards him. The horrible, soul-destroying pain continues, and then in front of his blurry eyes, beside the mast, she appears. (Molly) She strokes his face, looking behind him and hearing a repeat of himself with the flogger chastising him "For failing to protect everyone you have or will ever love" before looking at him with a frown of concern. "No, we won't be doing this, liebes herz." (Molly) She closes her eyes a moment. The next strike doesn't fall. She looks into his eyes, and he wants to reach for her but he can't. The pain remains, his restraint remains. She presses a soft kiss to his damp forehead. Her voice is like a quiet whisper "I love you…" and she vanishes. (Molly) He awakes suddenly, the cat that was curled up under his left arm shooting out of the bed. For a moment, the pain in his back lingers.
